Andy Power

I first started fishing aged 11 with my dad, where initially my main focus was specimen fishing. Although my patience with this slower side of the sport soon grew thin and aged 13 I persuaded my dad to buy me a cheap 11m starter pole.
Within a few months I was catching loads of fish and had actually caught a new pb carp on it at 24lb, which kind of made my mind to put the bite alarms away!
I was soon entering open matches at local Viaduct fishery, being dropped off by my dad, and aged 15 Iwon the first which also turned out to be the golden peg… always been lucky. Soon I was winning on a regular basis and became a bit of a venue expert.
Although I was winning, I had ambitions of learning new methods, and trying new venues, practically natural ones. When I could drive, I started mixing things up a bit and entered my first Whiteacres festival in 2006, which I came second in.
The following year I joined Preston Innovations Thatchers, regarded as the top team in the South West and the breading ground of many top anglers.
With Thatchers I have learned a huge amount about methods and tactics on natural waters and I now pride myself on being an all-rounder on any venue.
In 2009, I qualified for my first big money final, Fish’o’mania. Since then qualifying for these big events has become a bit of a habit and obsession!
In 2011 with a bit experience under my belt I made the first Match this final, drew an area nobody wanted to be and won the 50k first prize.
With the taste of victory still fresh have qualified for the same final  for the following two years, coming 3rd in 2012 and then 2nd in 2013 agonisingly less than a kilo away from winning the 50k final for a second time.
Missing out like this is hard to take, but it also makes me want to better myself and improve. At least there was the small token of being crowned UK champ in 2013!
I guess the taste of this big match success is what makes me chase qualifiers and fish festivals during the summer months its literately an addiction. During the winter months however, team fishing takes over and I get to fish venues I really enjoy such as the Bristol Avon and the K&A canal. Individually I tend to steer away from carp fishing during these months and focus on silverfish only matches which are generally great sport and really make me want to get up on a cold morning for.
I feel privileged to be involved with a company such as Preston Innovations who are at the forefront of modern match angling. I enjoy having an input into developing new products, and having a ‘A’ in A-level product design I take a keen interest. I feel I can offer expertise on a wide range of disciplines of the sport, and am by no means a ‘one trick pony’.
My favourite methods though have to be shallow fishing on the pole, and generally any kind of waggler fishing.

Two Preston products I particularly like..
•Mini 12’ Power Float: This rod along with thelighter F1 version, are perfect for most of my waggler fishing on commercials. I find that a 12’ rod is perfect for most situations as a 13’ can sometimes feel a little clumsy, whereas an 11’ doesn’t always give enough line pick-up on the strike.
•Mega Pro V Pole Roller: With our sometimes harsh windy British weather, a sturdy solid pole roller is a real must have item for me, and a real investment as it could save you from breaking precious carbon.
Two Sonubaits products I particularly like..
•Match Method Mix: The first time I used this groundbait I broke a fishery record. Ever since I have used it with the upmost confidence, and is always my first choice when it comes to method feeder fishing on shallow carp lakes. Its also very versatile as I’ve used it to great effect on the pole from margin carp to skimmers and f1s.

•Tigerfish Groundbait: This coarse high protein mix has been extremely effective in an number of situations. I particular bream venues such as the River Huntspill, I always feed this mix on my longer open-ended feeder line along with worm, caster and 2mm fin perfect pellets in the mix, it seems to have the effect of attracting the better quality fish. Due to its sticky nature it also makes it ideal for deep water method feeder fishing, and is awesome when fed down the edge for carp.
